About Africa World Airlines (AWA)
Africa World Airlines is a Ghanaian airline that was founded in 2010 by a Ghanaian banker and traditional leader Togbe Afede XIV. However, it was a joint venture between SAS Finance, SSNIT, China-Africa Development Fund, and HNA Group. Its headquarters is in Airport City Accra, and the Kotoka International Airport in Accra serves as its primary hub.
On August 30, 2012, Africa World Airlines received its first Embraer 145 aircraft, which was utilized to serve local flights. In the Middle East and Africa, AWA is the largest operator of Embraer 145 aircraft. In 2019, AWA and South African Airways signed a Memorandum of Understanding to seek prospects in West Africa together, including a system-wide codeshare arrangement and other commercial collaborations.
At Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the airline also announced an interline cooperation with Emirates to supply local and regional feed to its aircraft. AWA has also formed three-way cooperation with Ethiopian Airlines and ASKY to provide smooth travel throughout West Africa.
Africa World Airlines and Cabo Verde Airlines have also established a collaboration that would take effect in February 2020 to boost connectivity between their respective networks in West Africa.
